Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Funding Programmes
Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is a non-profit organization foundation established by the government of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1953. The foundation was named after the famous German explorer and scientist, Alexander von Humboldt. Every year, the foundation grants numerous competitive research fellowships and awards to support outstanding researchers of all disciplines and nationalities to complete long-term research stays in Germany, and promotes academic cooperation between excellent scientists and scholars from abroad and from Germany.
The Humboldt Foundation has more than 30,000 researchers worldwide belonging to the foundation’s network – the Humboldtians. If you would like to be a part of the strong network of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, your chance has come!
The following funding programmes are the calls that have several rounds in a year.
Deadline: Every February, June and October
Note: Please send your completed application form, including any additional documents required, well in advance of the desired selection date.
Targeted Researcher: Postdoctoral Researchers, and Experienced Researchers
Fund:
- Postdoctoral researchers: €2,670/month
- Experienced researchers: €3,170/month
Duration:
- Postdoctoral researchers: 6 to 24 months
- Experienced researchers: 6 to 18 months
Research Area: All disciplines
Note: The research outline must deal with issues of major relevance to the future development of the candidate’s country or region of origin.
Eligibility:
Postdocs
Candidates:
- completed a doctorate or an equivalent academic qualification during the last four years.
- must be a citizen of a developing or transition country – excluding PR China and India (see list of countries).
- must have lived and worked in a developing or transition country for at least 12 months within the last 18 months (excluding PR China and India).
- have been published in academic journals and by publishing houses that are reviewed according to international standards
- provide two expert reviews, which are your doctoral supervisor and one other researcher – outside of your institute, if possible – should provide well-grounded information on your qualifications.
Experienced researchers
Candidates:
- completed a doctorate or an equivalent academic qualification during the last twelve years.
- must be a citizen of a developing or transition country – excluding PR China and India (see list of countries).
- must have lived and worked in a developing or transition country for at least 12 months within the last 18 months (excluding PR China and India).
- have an academic profile that is substantiated by an extensive list of publications in academic journals and by publishing houses that are reviewed according to international standards.
- provide two expert reviews. The reviews should be provided by important collaborative partners and/or researchers at your own institute as well as other institutes – outside your country of origin, if possible.

- must have lived outside Germany for a minimum of 12 months in total in the 18-month period prior to submission of the application.
- have been published academic publications that reviewed according to international standards and printed in journals and/or by publishing houses.
- have a confirmation that research facilities are available and mentoring agreement and a detailed expert’s statement by an academic host at a research institution in Germany.
- provide two expert reviews, which are your doctoral supervisor and one other researcher – outside of your institute, if possible – should provide well-grounded information on your qualifications.
Experienced researchers
Candidates:
- completed a doctorate or an equivalent academic qualification during the last twelve years.
- can be of any nationality– excluding German.
- must have lived outside Germany for a minimum of 12 months in total in the 18-month period prior to submission of the application.

Note: The selection committee meets only twice a year (in March and October). Preparing a selection committee meeting – processing the respective nomination and obtaining peer reviews – takes approximately six months.
Targeted Researcher: Internationally Recognised Researchers
Fund: €60,000
Duration: 6-12 months
Research Area: All disciplines
Eligibility:
For Nominators
- An established academic who is employed by a university or other research institution in Germany must take the initiative to nominate a candidate for the Humboldt Research Award. Self-nomination is not possible.
For Nominees
- The nominee’s academic achievements must be internationally recognised and proven by corresponding successes in research.
- The nominee may not previously have received an award from the Humboldt Foundation for their academic work.
- At the time of nomination, the nominee must have been predominantly living and working outside Germany for at least five years.
- The nominee must not yet have entered permanent employment in Germany at the time of selection.

For Nominators
- A director or leading academic at a Fraunhofer Institute must take the initiative to nominate a candidate for the Fraunhofer-Bessel Research Award. Self-nomination is not possible.
For Nominees
- The nominated individual must have gained her/his doctorate no more than 18 years ago. An exception to this rule may be made where justified (e.g. in the case of career breaks to raise children).
- The nominee may not previously have received an award from the Humboldt Foundation for her/his academic work.
- At the time of nomination, the nominee must have been predominantly living and working outside Europe for at least five years.
- The nominee must not yet have entered permanent employment in Germany at the time of selection.

For Nominees
- The nominated individual must have gained her/his doctorate no more than 18 years ago. An exception to this rule may be made where justified (e.g. in the case of career breaks to raise children).
- The nominee may not previously have received an award from the Humboldt Foundation for her/his academic work.
- The nominee must have lived and worked outside Germany for over five years at the time of nomination.
- The nominee must not yet have entered permanent employment in Germany at the time of selection.
