European Research Council (ERC): Starting Grants

The ERC Starting Grants aim to support a talented early-career scientist/researcher of any nationality who is ready to work independently and shows potential to be a research leader as well as intends to conduct their independent research team or programme in the EU Member State or Associated Country. If you are an early-career researcher and looking for funding support, the ERC Starting Grant could be a great opportunity for you.

Eligibility: 

• Principal Investigator (PI) may be of any age and nationality with a scientific track record showing great promise and an excellent research proposal.
• PI shall have been awarded their first PhD at least 2 and up to 7 years prior to 1 January 2023.
  • Cut-off dates: PhD awarded from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2020(inclusive).
• Research must be conducted in a public or private research organisation (known as a Host Institution/HI).

Note:   

• Any type of legal entity, including universities, research centres and undertakings can host the PI and his/her team.
  • The PI does not necessarily need to be working at the host institution at the time when the proposal is submitted.
• HI must be established in one of the EU Member States, or one of the associated countries.
  • All PIs funded through an ERC Starting Grant must spend a minimum of 50% of their working time in an EU Member State or Associated Country and a minimum of 50% of their working time on the ERC project.
• PI must submit an application in conjunction with and on behalf of their HI.
• PI must have already shown the potential for research independence and evidence of maturity, for example by having produced at least one important publication as main author or without the participation of their PhD supervisor.
• ERC grants support projects carried out by an individual researcher who canemploy researchers of any nationality as team members.
  • It is also possible to have one or more team members located in a non-European country.
