Newton International Fellowships 2023
The Newton International Fellowships programme for 2023 round, jointly run by the British Academy and the Royal Society, is now open for applications. The programme aims to attract and support talented early career researchers from all countries to establish and conduct their research in the UK host organization. Additionally, the fellowship will enable researchers to access expertise, gain new perspectives and build a globally connected, mobile research and innovation workforce.
Funding Agencies: The Royal Society and the British Academy
Deadline: 28 March 2023
Fund: Up to £420,000 for three years, covering:
- basic salary as set by the host institution and associated on-costs
- research expenses
- relocation and visa costs for Newton International Fellows and their dependents (partner and children)
- estate costs and indirect costs
Research Areas: Natural sciences, which includes but is not limited to biological research, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics

Duration: 3 years
Eligibility:
- Applicants must have a PhD, or will have a PhD by the time the funding starts.
- Applicants should have no more than seven years of active full-time postdoctoral experience at the time of application (discounting career breaks, but including teaching experience and/or time spent in industry on research).
- Applicants should be working outside the UK and should not hold UK citizenship at the time of application.
- Applicants must be competent in oral and written English.
- Proposed Fellowships must be carried out in the UK at the UK host organisation for the duration of the Fellowship.
- Eligible UK host organisations are a university or not-for-profit research institution. Ineligible organisations include industrial, private and commercial organisations, university spin-out companies, and governmental bodies.

How to Apply?
- Applications for the natural and physical sciences should be submitted through the Royal Society’s grants management system Flexi-Grant®.
- Applications for the humanities and social sciences should be made to the British Academy.
