Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP): Research Grant

24 January 2022

Funding & Opportunity

The International Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) strives to strengthen open scientific inquiry by initiating international collaborative, interdisciplinary and cutting-edge basic research in the life sciences. The aim of the Program is to promote, through international cooperation, basic research focused on the elucidation of the sophisticated and complex mechanisms of living organisms, for the benefit of all humankind.

HFSP Research Grants support innovative basic research into fundamental biological problems with emphasis placed on novel and interdisciplinary approaches that involve scientific exchanges across national and disciplinary boundaries. Research grants are provided for teams of scientists from different countries who wish to combine their expertise in innovative approaches to questions that could not be answered by individual laboratories. Applicants are expected to develop new lines of research through research collaboration.

Deadlines:

  • Compulsory initiation of a Letter of Intent by obtaining a reference number: March 24th 2022
  • Submission of a Letter of Intent: March 31st 2022
  • Submission of Full Applications: mid-September 2022, on invitation only

Funds:

  • $300,000 for a team of 2
  • $400,000 for a team of 3
  • $500,000 for a team of 4 or more members

Duration: 3 years

Types of Grants:

  1. Research Grants – Early Career
  2. Research Grants – Program

Eligibility:

  • The HFSP research team may include 2 to 4 (rarely 5) members, whereby one member of the team is designated as the Principal Applicant and the others as Co-Applicants.
  • All team members must have a doctoral degree (PhD, MD or equivalent) and lead a research group (however small).

Note: “Postdocs” are not eligible to apply.

  • Team members are expected to work in different disciplines and have their labs in different countries.
  • The Principal Applicant must be located in an HFSPO member country, but other team members may be from anywhere in the world.
    • A research project with all team members in one country is not eligible.
    • Teams with 2 members from the same institution are not eligible to apply.
  • The team members should not have collaborated before.

In addition to the above general requirements for all Research Grants, the following conditions apply specifically to the two schemes:

  • Research Grants – Program (RG-Program)
    • All members of an Early Career grant team must be within 5 years of obtaining an independent position and must have obtained their first doctoral degree (PhD, MD or equivalent) not longer than 10 years before the deadline for submission of the letter of intent.
    • All applicants for an Early Career grant must be project leaders directing a research group (however small) and must have full responsibility for the day to day running of their laboratories and will have full control of the HFSP funds.
    • Written confirmation may be requested from the Head of Department in the case of an applicant who independently oversees a research theme.
  • Research Grants – Early Career (RG-Early Career)
    • While researchers can be at any stage in their independent career, participation of early career researchers is encouraged also in Program Grants
