[Call for Expression of Interest] White Paper Author
Generative AI in Education, an APRU Project supported by Microsoft
APRU is seeking Expression of Interest (EOI) from experts to author a White Paper as the key output of the Generative AI in Education Project.
Background
The use of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and DALL.E2 in higher education has quickly risen to global attention. They offer an intriguing combination of opportunities to support and enhance learning and the student experience, whilst at the same time raising major concerns around academic integrity, privacy, bias and ethics of use. Understanding how institutions are responding across the wide range of APRU members will support future strategy and planning in this space. With funding support from Microsoft, APRU embarked on a multi-phase project themed “Generative AI in Education: Opportunities, Challenges and Future Directions in Asia and the Pacific.”
About the Project
– Phase I (September – December 2023, in progress): Collation and review of case studies across the APRU institutions to create a “baseline snapshot” of the status quo.
– Phase II (2024, Call for White Paper Author): Up to two focused workshops to share experiences and identify key challenges/opportunities, and future scenarios that APRU institutions and other stakeholders may face. One multidisciplinary creative sandbox to conceptualize comprehensive perspectives on generative AI adoption in higher education.
Project Output
– A white paper/report summarizing and setting out project learnings including, e.g., exemplar models/scenarios for using the technology, guidance notes from key stakeholders, and specific needs and knowledge gaps identified as part of the engagement.
– A key goal of the paper will be to support university leaders, faculty, students and administrators to understand and potentially adopt emerging best practices at different levels of institutional readiness. The report will be disseminated widely through the APRU network, external partners and other channels, with the intention of applying an open license.
Key Responsibilities of White Paper Author
– Actively support development of and participate in up to two project workshops (one face to face, one virtual) and one innovation sandbox (virtual).
– Stay up to date with latest trends and development generative AI, and its impact on education in the Asia Pacific region and globally.
– By Summer 2024 (exact date TBC): develop the paper outline based on collated case studies, workshop findings/outputs and latest development and impact of generative AI.
– By September 2024 (exact date TBC): complete the first draft of White Paper.
– By December 2024 (exact date TBC): final White Paper submission.
Key Collaborator Relationships
The White Paper Author will work closely and collaboratively with members of the APRU Secretariat, the Project Academic Lead (Dr Simon Bates, University of British Columbia), the Project Advisory Group and the external innovation and design thinking agency engaged for workshop design and facilitation to deliver the responsibilities set out above, and the broader overall goals of the project.
Funding Support
USD8,000 to cover all engagement in the project including in-person participation and travel expenses for one workshop expected to take place in June 2024 at a location in Asia (TBC).
