Professor Xingcheng Lu, of the Department of Geography and Resource Management at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Acting Assistant to the President of Research Affairs, Associate Professor Dr. Pannee Cheewinsiriwat, of the Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts have been awarded the CUHK Strategic Partnership Award for their joint project, “Investigating the Effects of Biomass Burning on Air Quality and Associated Health Risks in Thailand.” This prestigious award has provided HK$150,000 to support their research efforts.
The Strategic Partnership Award for Research Collaboration (SPARC) was established in 2021 as part of the CUHK’s global engagement strategy, with an aim to foster joint research programs with top-tier overseas institutional partners, focusing on the CUHK’s strategic research areas: “China: tradition and modernity”; “innovative biomedicine”; “information and automation technology”; and “environment and sustainability”. SPARC is designed to seed new collaborative projects that can make a significant impact and secure external funding for further development.
The joint project between the CUHK and Chulalongkorn University highlights the value of international collaboration in addressing critical global issues. The funding will also help advance research on the effects of biomass burning on air quality and health risks in Thailand, with the goal of enhancing environmental and public health in the region.
