Chulalongkorn University BRIDGES Nobel Laureate Talk Series: A Global Gathering of Minds

6 December 2023

Recent news

Chulalongkorn University is organizing the Chulalongkorn University BRIDGES Nobel Laureate Talk Series, as part of the JAPAN-ASEAN BRIDGES Event Series, facilitated by the International Peace Foundation. The Series is divided into 4 sessions held between November 2023 and March 2024. It will showcase presentations by four distinguished Nobel Laureates in Physics, Economics, and Medicine. On November 27, 2023, the first event will begin with a keynote speech by Prof. Takaaki Kajita, a Nobel Laureate for Physics at the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research of the University of Tokyo, Japan, entitled “The importance of science for peace-building”. Following the keynote speech is a talk entitled “Diversity and inclusion in science collaboration and a bridge to peace” by Dr. Chayanit Asawatangtrakuldee, Lecturer, Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University.

Prof. Kajita emphasises in his talk that various scientific studies have become more complex, thus, collaboration among scientists is necessary to produce significant results. At present, scientists of diverse nationalities are collaborating in experimental physics, particularly particle physics or astroparticle physics. In addition, he believes that science can contribute to world peace through these collaborations.

Prof. Chayanit focuses on how team diversity can drive significant scientific discoveries, and how inclusivity is key to overcoming language and cultural barriers. Moreover, fostering working environments can enable members of a team to contribute their greatest potential to the whole team.

The Talk Series aims not only to promote global cooperation and understanding through the lens of groundbreaking research and innovation but also prove as a testament to the university’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The speakers, hailing from different corners of the globe, will share their insights on how collaboration and diversity drive scientific breakthroughs. The organizers encourage participation from lecturers, researchers and students, underscoring the belief that science can serve as a bridge to peace.

The Chulalongkorn University BRIDGES Nobel Laureate Talk Series will present three more events between January and March 2024 (January 15th, February 12th, and March 25th). Interested participants can obtain more information via our website https://www.inter.chula.ac.th/.
