HYI-NUS Joint Doctoral Scholarship Program at NUS, Singapore, for the Academic Year 2025-26

Exclusive for Chula’s Full-Time Faculty Members in Humanities and Social Sciences
I. Overview:
The Harvard-Yenching Institute and the National University of Singapore (with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Asia Research Institute as principal participants) have established a joint doctoral scholarship program, whereby candidates apply simultaneously for an NUS Ph.D. and the NUS and HYI joint fellowship to support it. The HYI Joint Scholarship Program provides the funding for young faculty members to pursue a Ph.D. at the National University of Singapore (NUS), with one year of dissertation research at Harvard University. The candidates will normally be at the NUS for three years and in the U.S. for one academic year. Up to 2 candidates from Chulalongkorn University can be nominated.
II. Funding:
1. Each candidate will be funded for a maximum of 4 years (48 months) of full-time study. The NUS will cover 38 months, with the remaining 10 months of conducting dissertation research at Harvard University.
2. At the NUS, the scholarship will include tuition fees and a stipend. While at Harvard, HYI will cover economy fare roundtrip transportation to Cambridge, a monthly stipend and medical insurance for the individual scholar.
III. Eligibility: the candidates
1. Must be nominated by Chulalongkorn University,
2. Hold a teaching position or possess teaching experience at Chulalongkorn University and are assured of reemployment after graduation from the NUS.
3. Conduct research focusing on one of the following fields:
- Anthropology
- Archaeology
- Area and International Studies
- Art and Architectural History
- History (including Art History, Economic History, and Legal History)
- Linguistics
- Literature
- Media and Film Studies
- Philosophy
- Politics
- Study of Religion
- Sociology
- Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies
Applicants in the fields of Economics, Education, Geography, Law. Psychology, and Public Administration may be considered, but must check with the Institute before submitting
4. Meet the admission requirements as set out for the Ph.D. program at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, NUS.
