How Can ASEAN Universities Thrive in the Next Decade?
ASEAN grew to be one of the most important regions globally for good reasons. Almost half of the world’s seaborne trade passes through this region, including a quarter of all oils. It has the third-largest labor force, behind only China and India. Just over a decade ago, almost 80% of people in the region had no internet access; today, ASEAN has the most engaged mobile internet users in the world.
The future of the ASEAN region is young, optimistic, and complicated. One-third of its 655 million population is youth, a key ingredient to ensure sustained economic growth. It is geographically and economically important to both the East and West, and its people have a unique cultural understanding of both sides. It benefits from multilateralism but is increasingly challenged by growing protectionism. It has been one of the fastest-growing regions, but its unequal development is also concerning.
A thriving higher education system that trains skilled workers and explores the frontier of human knowledge is critical for ASEAN. As the region rapidly becomes the rising center of traditional supply chains, there is a vast and urgent need for more skilled laborers and experienced managers. Meanwhile, the Fourth Industrial Revolution built on Artificial Intelligence and Automation is rapidly making many occupations obsolete. Higher education institutions in the region play an essential role in making sure the young generation is not only competitive in today’s global job market but also ready for tomorrow’s innovations and disruptions.
