European Research Council (ERC): Consolidator Grant

The ERC Consolidator Grant is now open for scientists in all fields of research, on the basis of scientific excellence, who wants to consolidate their independence by establishing a research team and continuing to develop a successful career in Europe. Any field of research (The ERC’s grants operate on a ‘bottom-up’ basis without predetermined priorities.)

Eligibility:

  • Principal Investigators (PIs) may be of any age and nationality and may reside in any country in the world at the time of the application.
  • PIs shall have successfully defended their first PhD at least 7 and up to 12 years prior to 1 January 2023. Cut-off dates: PhD awarded from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2015 (inclusive).
  • Research must be conducted in a public or private research organisation (known as a Host Institution aka HI).
    Note: 
    • Any type of legal entity, including universities, research centres and undertakings can host the PI and his/her team.
    • The PI does not necessarily need to be working at the host institution at the time when the proposal is submitted.
  • HI must be based in one of the EU Member States, or one of the Associated Countries.
  • All PIs funded through an ERC Consolidator Grant spend a minimum of 50% of their working time in an EU Member State or Associated Country and a minimum of 40% of their working time on the ERC project.
  • Applications for an ERC grant must be submitted by a single PI in conjunction with and on behalf of their Host Institution, called the applicant legal entity.
  • PI must have already shown research independence and evidence of maturity, for example by having produced several important publications as main author or without the participation of their PhD supervisor.
  • ERC grants support projects carried out by an individual researcher who could employ researchers of any nationality as team members. It is also possible to have one or more team members located in a non-European country.
